Anurag Kumar Appointed New Delhi Police Commissioner, Brings Three Decades of Intelligence and Policing Experience
Anurag Kumar, a 1994 batch IPS officer and former Intelligence Bureau Special Director, has been appointed as the new Delhi Police Commissioner. With nearly 32 years of policing experience, Kumar will focus on law and order, organised crime control, cybercrime prevention, women's safety, counter-terrorism preparedness, and VIP security.
Kumar succeeds Satish Golcha, who took charge as Delhi Police Commissioner in August last year and was scheduled to continue in the position until April 2027.
Before taking over as Delhi Police Commissioner, Anurag Kumar served as a Special Director in the Intelligence Bureau, India’s premier intelligence agency. During his extensive tenure with the organisation, he handled several critical responsibilities related to national security, counter-terrorism strategies, intelligence analysis, and sensitive security matters.
With nearly 32 years of experience in policing and administration, Kumar has built a diverse and distinguished career. Throughout his service, he has undertaken several key responsibilities across different domains and gained extensive expertise in security and law enforcement operations. He has received two promotions in the last five years, reflecting his professional performance and service record.
Kumar holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree, combining technical knowledge with extensive policing experience. His educational background and professional expertise are expected to support technology-driven policing and help address emerging security challenges in the capital.
For his exceptional service, Kumar has received several prestigious honours. He was awarded the Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 2010 and later received the President's Police Medal for Distinguished Service in 2016.
As Delhi Police Commissioner, Kumar will focus on maintaining law and order in the national capital, controlling organised crime, combating cybercrime, strengthening women's safety measures, enhancing counter-terrorism preparedness, and ensuring effective VIP security arrangements.
Delhi Police remains one of India’s most strategically important police forces due to the sensitive nature of the national capital and the continuous security responsibilities associated with it. Kumar’s extensive experience in intelligence and security operations is expected to contribute significantly to strengthening Delhi’s policing framework and addressing the complex challenges faced by the capital.
